Secret Refuge

That little girl lost
In her own world
Sees not a yard
But a miniature world

The stumps aren’t dead
But filled instead
With mystical creatures
Like under her bed

The world through her eyes
Is bigger than I’ll realize
And I’ll sit there
Running fingers through her hair
As she goes on
The adventure’s shared

Won’t discourage or ask how
She needs this more now than ever
Something to believe in
I hate to see her frown

She has her adventures
With me standing guard
That giant world covered
Never to fall down

Our backyard is her playground
From a world of fairies
To an alien planet
It’s her escape from this world

As long as I can
She’ll always have it
Her secret refuge
In her own little big world
